Fernando Pessoa as a Guide to Esotericism in Portugal: From the Legacy of Al-Andalus to Pessoa’s Neo-Templarism Fabrizio Boscaglia, Ph.D.
Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) was one of the most important Portuguese contemporary writers and intellectuals who had a special interest in esotericism, mysticism and spirituality. In this presentation, we will see how Pessoa developed an original and complex esoteric view of history, culture and spirituality, through the reinterpretation of Jewish, Templar and Islamic spiritual legacies in Portugal. Materials from Pessoa’s estate and private library will be shown and interpreted.
The Hidden Body-Soul-Spirit of Portugal Paulo Borges
The physical and geographical body of Portugal was seen by Fernando Pessoa as the face of Europe contemplating the Infinite in the Atlantic West. The finisterre of Portugal and the Portuguese unconscious incarnate as saudade (the longing or nostalgia for what there is before there is anything, the Matrix or cosmic womb of reality). This is the Portuguese soul, expressed in Fado, the song-catharsis that intensifies and at the same time frees us from the passions tying the soul in time and space. However, the Portuguese spirit is said to be the Undercover King himself, the invisible sovereignty within each heart that will manifest itself to regenerate all things and inaugurate a new Age of the Spirit and the World, the Fifth Empire or the Empire of the Holy Spirit.
